1 Year-Old Exams
When should quality dental care begin? At Neumann Family Dentistry, we think your child’s first dental visit should be scheduled around his/her first birthday. The most important part of the visit is allowing your child to get to know – and become comfortable – with Dr. Neumann and his team. A pleasant, comfortable first visit builds trust and helps put your child at ease during future dental visits. It’s the first step to a lifetime of optimal oral health for your child.
Damage to the nerve tissue inside of a tooth sometimes requires a root canal procedure, and is much more comfortable than you might expect due to advances in dentistry. A root canal involves removing the soft tissue within the tooth (also known as the pulp) when it has become infected and inflamed. Dr. Neumann gently files the infected tissue out of the root canals of the tooth and fills the void with an inert material. The procedure will gently restore your health by addressing the issues in the nerve and root system of your affected tooth. Finished with a lifelike porcelain crown, you will quickly return to your natural form and function!
Do you suffer from decayed, disfigured, or discolored teeth? If so, you may be a good candidate for fillings. Once Dr. Neumann has removed the decayed portion of the tooth, he replaces it with filling material. Amalgam (silver) fillings or composite resin material is bonded to the teeth for a strong restoration.
Oral Cancer Screening
As a comprehensive dental provider – and the only medical professionals in a position to routinely evaluate your mouth and detect abnormalities – Dr. Neumann and his team offer routine oral cancer screenings to you as a patient. Like other cancers, early detection is the key. The statistics are eye-opening: 41,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year, resulting in 12,500 deaths. Unless you seek regular continuous care from a dental professional, you could be putting your health at risk by delaying a diagnosis in the early stage of oral cancer. Dr. Neumann and his team are dedicated to providing this potentially life-saving procedure for you.
Many people notice chipped or cracked teeth, but don’t remember when the injury occurred. A common cause: they damaged their teeth while sleeping. Grinding or clenching your teeth during the night can cause your teeth to chip, crack and even break (and they can lead to terrible headaches). To keep you from seriously damaging your teeth, we recommend a dental appliance called a nightguard. A custom made nightguard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching in your sleep. Ask Dr. Neumann about having a nightguard custom created especially for you.
Q: My teeth keep chipping and cracking. What causes this? What can I do about it?
A: Many people who notice chipped or cracked teeth, but don’t remember when the injury occurred, damaged their teeth while they were sleeping. Grinding or clenching your teeth during the night will cause your teeth to chip, crack and even break. To keep you from seriously damaging your teeth, we recommend a dental appliance called a nightguard. A custom fitted nightguard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching in your sleep. Dr. Neumann will take great care in making sure you have a proper fit to prevent pain in your jaw joint. Do you also suffer from headaches? If so, you may find that a side benefit of your nightguard is headache prevention. Many headaches start during the night, caused by the extreme pressure generated as you grind and clench your teeth. Ask us about having a nightguard custom created for you.
While nightguards protect your teeth from grinding against one another and becoming damaged, an NTI is another possible solution. This small device covers only your anterior (front) teeth. Like a nightguard, it’s made from acrylics and hard plastics. However, in addition to preventing the grinding of teeth, the extra benefit of the NTI is that over time, the device teaches your muscles to relax. In this way, an NTI may be able to help you break your habit of grinding altogether. Ask your Neumann Family Dentistry team if an NTI is right for you.
According to research from the American Dental Association, mouthguards help prevent 200,000 injuries each year in high school and collegiate football alone. If you or your child takes part in sports or other similar activities, mouthguards are a great way to help protect against concussions and dental injuries. Remember though: all mouthguards are not created equal. A custom-designed mouthguard from Dr. Neumann, made right here in our office, can offer a perfect fit, minimal interference with speaking and breathing, and strong protection against injury. Talk to Dr. Neumann today if you or your child needs a custom mouthguard.
